Prop and armour making - good idea or bad idea?

So... With my decision (literally during my first viewing of the film) to cosplay as Astrid, I had to decide if I was going to have an axe.  Apart from a rather epic giant spanner when at an 80s cartoon fancy dress party (Gadget from Rescue Rangers ftw) I have never really had a prop of any sort; it's all been about the outfit in my previous cosplays.

To be honest, the reason I liked Astrid, apart from my love of the character, is that her outfit allows me to practice other skills... Armour, leather(ette) and props... Without it being the ENTIRE costume.

When I initially started thinking about 'branching out' into more than just sewing I went where every good person goes when wanting to learn something... THE INTERNETS!  I've been inspired by so many different cosplayers and photographers but the main person I have been most inspired by when thinking about armour and props is of course the wonderful Kamui. 

Seriously, who doesn't think that her Protoss Wizard is incredible?! I have downloaded both her ebooks and would definitely recommend them! Looking forward to the prop book when it comes out to complete my collection.

Obviously I'm not going to run before I can walk, though I do occasionally bite off a bit more than I can chew, hence deciding on a little bit of armour and a 'simple' prop.

So after some fairly extensive research... When I say extensive, I mean... reading the ebook, watching a few videos and saying to myself "Yeah! I CAN DO THIS!" I finally took the plunge into making my first bit of armour and my first prop!

Astrid Progress 2

I've been really getting on with Astrid this week.  Not as much as I would like to because of gardening and worrying and all that usual stuff building up when what you ought to be doing is fun, mind healing things.

Like making axes and the like.

So, I tried to do the 100 happy days tag/projects before but forgot about it... Bad right?  Tonight my friend Suzy mentioned in our regular Skype chats that she was thinking of participating.

What better way to complete something than to have the motivation of both happiness and your friend!?!

So I'm all signed up on the 100 Happy Days site and have started tonight with.... No not sewing or cosplay progress, but gardening.  Guess I'm taking a leaf out of Suzy's book!

I'll aim for a weekly update of my happy photos every Sunday. Expect lots of gardening and sewing.

Astrid Progress 1

I only saw How to Train Your Dragon a few weeks ago after being introduced to it by a friend. Choosing to watch it was the BEST decision - I loved it.  Such a cute movie, great animation and like hello... dragons!

As soon as I saw it, I loved Astrid, strong and cute but also, obviously, gets a great guy (boy really!).  I had to cosplay as her.  Cue the usual Pinterest planning.

Then... Disaster struck and I started getting excited about HTTYD2.  I much prefer her outfit in the sequel, particularly the extra fur and updated colours.  So I started having a scribble and working a few things out.

After a searching around the town centre for some suitable pleather (and failing) I thought about upholstery fabric; I managed to find some perfect stuff in Dunelm Mill.  I spent an evening cutting strips and distressing them with sandpaper and black acrylic paint... Lots of fun.

And then today.... Stretch fabric! Slightly scary, but actually after cutting a rough vest shape and then pinning it around my dress form, I now have a pretty good base for Astrid's top.

I can't believe how much fun I am having at the moment with sewing and costuming, especially making something from nothing.  Just wish I had an overlocker... One day.

I've been trying to sort out a lot of stuff with work lately which has impacted on my blogging, which I really want to try and keep up with as a little log of all the things I have been working on... Seemingly quite a lot...

I have a lot of projects on the go at the moment so expect some updates over the next few days, including updates on the fairy outfit and pressing flowers!

Fairytale Ball

I have a convention coming up soon and the costume theme for the Saturday night party is 'fairytale ball.'  I hadn't really felt like going so hadn't planned any elaborate cosplays or anything but since I've decided to go I am now suddenly caught with the arduous task (yeah right!) of creating myself a costume.  The Friday and Sunday themes don't really grab me because I prefer the challenge of a costume, as opposed to wearing normal clothes that make you look like a character.  Just my personal preference!

Anyway, I am not going to be a specific fairy (no Tinkerbell here thank you very much) but more just 'a fairy.'  I like fantasy art and ballet fairies - like the lovely ladies and beautiful costumes below.  Yes that's from Ballet West's Cinderella, yes I loved Breaking Pointe - what of it?

Obviously, above is beautiful and incredible and oh god turnout!  I could never dream of anything that amazing for my outfit.  I have collected a few things on a Pinterest inspiration board below and think I have a reasonable idea of what I am after.

I then visited my favourite shop ever, Fabricland, to pick up some fabric.  Their website is full on nineties Geocities and I love it for that.  I think I picked up most of the base material for around £14.  I then had to get a few extra cottons and will probably need trimmings as well when I have done a little more construction.

This is a rough sketch I did yesterday whilst having a coffee; my friend Katie has already remarked that she can't read my doctor handwriting.

And this is all the material I have bought so far... And some fake flowers. No doubt I will be back at my favourite place in no time for more. I actually went twice in one day as I had to buy myself some pinking shears.

I think I'll be working on it most of today so they'll be plenty of progress pictures on Instagram.
